Recently the book "Clinical epidemiology. Principles, methods and applications for clinical research" was published. The authors and contributors are know for their high quality clinical epidemiological research which has find its way to many high impact medical journals. They not only have contributed to the knowledge base of medicine but also to the knowledge base of the methodology of clinical epidemiology. With this in mind and with my background as a clinical epidemiologist and clinician, I have read the book.

The book has a sound and helpful structure. They divided the book in principles of clinical research and the tools for clinical research. In the overview that precedes these two parts, they present an overview in which they give their conceptual framework of clinical epidemiology. This framework is used throughout the book and helps to understand many of the principles. This framework also has strong roots in daily clinical work and principles of clinical practice. This starting point, the many clinical examples from a diversity of medical subspecialties, the clear style and the fundamental relevance of clinical epidemiology for clinical practice makes it attractive for clinicians from many fields. A further division in etiologic, diagnostic, prognostic and intervention research makes it even more accessible for clinicians.

Their description of the tools for clinical research again shows their understanding of the field. Not only do they describe, explain and illustrate with examples but also discuss aspects that have not been settled. They take position based on arguments and their conceptual framework but do not become dogmatic.
