ADHD in adulthood is a prevalent and impairing disorder. While medications have been effective in treating adult ADHD, the majority of individuals treated with medications have residual symptoms that require additional skills and symptom management strategies. Except for the intervention described in this series, there have been virtually no tested psychological interventions for clients with adult ADHD to date. Used in conjunction with the corresponding client workbook, this therapist guide offers effective treatment strategies that follow an empirically-supported treatment approach. It provides clinicians with effective means of teaching clients skills that have been scientifically tested and shown to help adults cope with ADHD. The step-by-step, session-by-session descriptions are a practical resource for therapists who deliver the treatment to clients with ADHD. Together, the therapist guide and client workbook contain all of the information and materials necessary to delivery this treatment in the context of individual outpatient cognitive behavioral therapy.

Mastering Your Adult ADHD: A Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment Program Therapist Guide PDF

Dr. Safren et al have struck just the right notes in just the right places to create a practical program to address the core challenges of adult ADHD.

It is important to note this "Therapist Guide", AND its "Client Workbook" companion, is aimed at the therapist, not the patient, despite the titles having the word "Your" in it. ADHD patients may be frustrated if they attempt to apply the techniques by themselves, without the coaching and guidance of a competent psychotherapist who uses Dr. Safren's system.

Context is important. Peer-reviewed research indicates patients with ADHD do best with a combination of medications and cognitive-behavioural therapy. The authors address only the latter, leaving prescribing to the physician. However, the program does include medication monitoring, and presumably the non-prescribing psychotherapist will give feedback to the prescribing physician periodically.

The book is evidence-based, meaning it only includes psychological methods that have withstood the potentially withering process of peer review and statistical analysis. Techniques that are highly regarded and even have supporting research, such as neurofeedback and regular exercise, are left out if they have not yet met the criteria for at least Level D evidence.

The manual is short, to the point, easy to read, and shows an economy of writing and of examples, appealing to the busy therapist and the short attention spans of ADHD clients (and many therapists!).

The authors take a tabula rasa approach to the patient, i.e; they assume the patient presents with no coping skills for ADHD and needs help with everything. The psychopathology of ADHD can be very complex because of its many co-morbid conditions (e.g; depression, anxiety, addiction and so on).
