Helping children develop greater empathy-related awareness and skills can help prevent negative social behaviours such as bullying, meanness, and alienation. Empathy is a fundamental social emotion because it brings a sense of emotional connection to others. It is this awareness that is not only basic to all healthy relationships; it is the root of prosocial behaviour, altruism, kindness and peace. Empathy has cognitive, affective and behavioural components that can be learned and improved upon by children. The lessons and activities in this book are designed to: teach students the value of empathy; assist students in recognizing their own and others’ feelings; help students put themselves in “someone else’s shoes”; and instruct students how to exhibit understanding and acceptance. Each topic-related lesson includes five inviting worksheets that can be reproduced and used repeatedly with elementary school-aged students.

Teaching Children Empathy, The Social Emotion: Lessons, Activities and Reproducible Worksheets That Teach How to "Step Into Others' Shoes" PDF

I bought this book because I have an only child, daughter 10, who is a great kid but VERY self-absorbed. We have done the usual parenting to try to encourage her to think of other's feelings, but it doesn't come naturally to her and she has a hard time "getting it".

This book was more useful than I even expected. How can you teach empathy? The sections are quite specific. Empathy and Learning to Read Others Feelings. Empathy through Listening. Temporarily Putting Your Own Feelings Aside. (This is big for my daughter!) Empathy and Making Supportive Statements. Empathy and Conflict Resolution. The worksheets are great, and again, very specific. The book doesn't just say "do these things", it helps kids find their own way HOW to do them. I am extremely pleased and we will be using this book in our family.
