This is truly the standard for a comprehensive list of diseases that most pet owners/livestock producers/veterinarians will encounter (only some of the obscure diseases are missing, and those will likely be added if they become a more prominent public issue). The Merck Veterinary Manual has been considered a veterinary standard for years. I don't think I have met a vet yet that doesn't have this book stocked on their shelves. That being said, this book is written in easily understood language and the parts that are a bit more difficult usually have further explanations or will refer you to sections of text that cover a particular concept.
The book is broken up into sections based on the locality of the disease: eye and ear, metabolic, respiratory, management & nutrition, etc. The index is usually the easiest way to look up a specific disease. Each disease section covers symptoms, description of the disease, vectors (carriers of the disease like bacteria vs. parasites), how to recognize the disease, treatments/therapies, and when the problem is likely to occur (age, season, etc). This edition (10th) marked the edition of color photos for many of the diseases, facilitating the understanding of the disease.
This edition has once again expanded the list of topics and species covered, expanding the exotic animal section once again. There is also a section related to behavior problems and behavior modification concept/definition which can be useful if you learn and understand the principles discussed. Another useful section is the emergency situation section. A reference section is also quite handy-it provides average ranges for temperatures, respiration rates, and pulses on "normal" livestock and companion animals.
