The book covers each step throughout the submission process, from organizing and outlining the manuscript, presenting statistical data and results, to what happens during the in-house manuscript review process and what to do if an article is initially rejected. In addition to providing practical exercises on these topics, the book focuses on helping writers distil their research into concise take-home messages for readers, in order to convey information as clearly as possible to the target audience.Direct download links available for PRETITLE Getting Published in the Life Sciences POSTTITLE

Getting Published in the Life Sciences PDF

This book has three authors, and it shows- but not in a positive way. The quality of writing is jarringly uneven- some sections read well and the text flows smoothly, whereas other sections contain continuous paragraphs of stilted prose, reminiscent of that generated by writers who have picked up the worst characteristics of scientific writing (indirect, convoluted sentences; clumsy attempts to render statements in third person speech, with abrupt switches to second person; distracting efforts to make quotes gender-neutral).

The text needs extensive editing- many concepts, words, and even quotes are repeated, giving the impression that the authors wrote duplicate versions of the material, made a half-hearted attempt to combine their contributions, failed to prune redundant material, and neglected to maintain a uniformly high standard of writing across the book. This comes across as extremely unprofessional, particularly for a guide on the art of manuscript writing and good prose! This is unfortunate as there are many good pointers sprinked throughout the book, and the authors have clearly refined their teaching methods, with the inclusion of well-thought-out classroom exercises and recommendations for course materials.

Here are some concrete examples of their transgressions:

-On page 70: 'Let us start this section with a quotation that is extremely meaningful fo writers who try and make their writing seamless in the eyes of the reader. It comes from one of the greatest authors of American literature. "The greatest possible merit of style is, of course, to make the words absolutely disappear into the thought.
